Three bells toll for you in your lifetime—
by Zoe Contros Kearl
at the bar we’re talking civic duty
wetlands, hibiscus tea, bringing back
the draft. Troubled by the lyric mode,
heartbroken and nobody here knows.
Blaze orange, self-referential faggots
leaning forward toward one another
talking about how now we belong
to these small towns. They can have
all there is to have. Sunset over mountain
range whose name I don’t know.
I hate war I hate destruction of wetlands
I hate flash floods I hate not talking to you
I hate writing this sonnet until it is not
a sonnet water is waiting everything
is waiting it’s all on the other side
