REGULAR SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
POETRY: Please submit up to 2 poems at once and up to 4 pages total. We do our best to accommodate variation in spacing/form, but we might not be the right place for highly form-based or shape poems.
PROSE: Please send up to 2 flash pieces or one longer prose piece under 1500 words.
HYBRID/OTHER: Use your judgement. Four pages maximum.
24 HOUR TURNAROUND: We recognize that sometimes you need answers. For a minimum donation of $5, we will provide a submission decision within 24 hours of receipt.
Note: Submissions must be sent during open reading periods. Please write “24 HOUR TURNAROUND” in the subject line of your submission email. Submissions that do not meet both of these requirements may not be responded to within the timeframe.
Stone of Madness publishes quarterly on January 15, April 15, July 15, and October 15. We’re open for submissions the entire month prior to each publication month: all of December, March, June, and September.
Please only submit once per submission period unless we request to see more of your work.
Please include any relevant Content Warnings in your submission. Another note on content: We will not accept any work containing racism, ableism, audism, misogyny, transphobia, homophobia, xenophobia, sexual harassment or assault, or any other bigoted themes or content.
Please include the word “submission” in your email subject line.
We prefer submissions to be attached to emails in a .doc/.docx format. If you’d like to attach a PDF because of concerns over form, please attach both types of file if possible. (If this format isn’t possible for you, let us know and we’ll be happy to look at your work however you are able to send it to us!)
We accept simultaneous submissions, but ask that you email us to withdraw your piece if it is accepted elsewhere. We sometimes accept previously published work (though we have a preference for unpublished work).
We do not tolerate AI-generated or -assisted submissions. Any submitter found to be using AI will be blocked from submitting to any future issues of the magazine.
If you are accepted for publication (congratulations!), there is a “cool off” period of one issue before you can resubmit. For example, if you’re published in Issue 4, you can submit again to Issue 6.
