picklejuice

by Val Drew

used to look at cruise websites    as a child

    used to watch telenovelas    americanized

witches in florida    used to live in florida

shoplifted buttermilk    from a new england chain

for a woodland family    with new money

drove all the way to peabody    met a personal chef

went to a restaurant   you get a tray at the counter

you go down the line    there’s a desert freezer

with cheesecake    your mother’s watching closely

i only go to basketball games    if i know the players

and the players aren’t real players    and it’s a big joke

and i’m a smaller joke    recording you making the shot

call my friends “babe”    because love needs to be funny

you have my texts saved    when i need a deathstrike

know the punchline    for the day you become one

when i named myself pickles    i wanted your attention

you just loved a thousand dollars    in your piggy bank

so i stopped paying the fee    and watched you writhe
