Penny

by Hadassah Shiradski

They say that it’s a penny for your thoughts. And so you give them for a penny, and so you give them for a penny, and so you give them for a penny and a penny and a penny. And your thoughts are part of you, silly child. Didn’t you pay attention? No wonder you can’t recall all your fleeting thoughts, if you gave them away for want of a penny. You gave them away for a penny, for a penny, for another penny, until you had enough pennies to fill a person and not enough thoughts to make one.

So tell me.

Who are you now, penny-child?
