When it Rains it Pours

by Claire Sosienski Smith

the lifelong belief in your own beauty

keeps you one step ahead of gender

and I only ever wanted to be

the morton salt girl, loved in motion

when you throw

the salt grinder overboard

don’t look

when you evaporate in the sun

remember that whatever goes

was never needed

when what stays behind

spells out your true name
