What Autistic Girls Sound Like When They Try and Fail to Mimic the Cadence of Men Who Debate Politics On Twitch

by Audrey Snow Matzke

often times i hear you say things, and i think

they are incisive. like the moon, or maybe

something less relative. tell them what you said

when the blinking sky turned

purple in your fist, and now,

a concession: in ninth grade

i did model u.n. for a week,

and i didn’t know where

to put my hands. and

i was quiet, and i was the queen

of some landlocked country, stringing bullet-

points in another thin line

tonight you will speak

with both hands,

hear a buzz, and it’s

one quick song for the livestream, your intro, or maybe

something less relative.

Audrey Snow Matzke (she/they) is a queer and autistic high-school student from Chicago, IL. Brand new to the litmag scene, she is forthcoming in The Augment Review, and is always looking for new places to submit. In Minecraft, they have a horse named Jocasta.
